⚠️ WAR ZONE – HIGH RISK
The German Federal Foreign Office advises against all travel to Ukraine due to the ongoing war . Military actions, including missile and drone attacks, occur daily and affect all regions of the country . The French Ministry also formally advises its citizens against travel to Ukraine for any reason . Travel is only possible overland as Ukrainian airspace is closed . This profile is for information purposes; travel decisions are solely your responsibility.

1. Entry Requirements & Documents

Passport A biometric passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure date is required. It must contain at least two blank pages .

Visa EU/EEA/Swiss citizens and nationals of many other countries (USA, UK, Canada, Australia, etc.) can enter visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period . For longer stays or if you are not visa-exempt, a visa must be obtained before travel .

  • Required Documents: Proof of sufficient funds (approx. 45 USD per day), confirmation of accommodation/hotel reservation, and a return/onward ticket .
  • Registration: If staying longer than 90 days, registration with the migration authorities is required.
  • Customs: Cash amounts over 10,000 EUR must be declared. There are strict regulations on the export of cultural goods and precious stones .
  • Digital copies: Keep scans of passport, visa, and insurance in your email/cloud.

Mandatory Vaccinations No mandatory vaccinations for entry.

Recommended Routine vaccines: MMR, DTaP, polio, influenza. Hepatitis A & B, rabies, and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) are recommended for some regions .

  • Travel Health Insurance is mandatory. Standard policies often do not cover war-related injuries. You must have a policy that explicitly covers military risks .
  • Medical Care: Generally good in major cities (Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa), but may be below Western European standards in rural areas. Ambulance services may be delayed .

Current Situation EXTREME DANGER. The entire territory of Ukraine is considered a war zone. Russian airstrikes with missiles and drones occur almost daily and can affect any part of the country . The German Foreign Office warns of intensified attacks around Independence Day (August 24) . There is no safe region in Ukraine.

  • Air Raids: Download the official "Air Alarm" app. When a siren sounds, go to the nearest shelter immediately .
  • Curfew: A strict curfew is in effect in most regions (times vary). Do not go out during curfew .
  • Risk Areas: Eastern and southern regions are active combat zones. Western regions are relatively more stable but still at risk from missile attacks .
  • Photography: Taking photos of military facilities, checkpoints, or the aftermath of attacks is prohibited .

  • Useful phrases: Pryvit (hello), Diakuiu (thanks), Bud laska (please), Vybachte (excuse me), Vy hovoryte anhliiskoiu? (do you speak English?)
  • Mentality: Warm, hospitable, and resilient. Direct communication is appreciated.
  • Religion: Predominantly Orthodox Christianity (two main churches: Orthodox Church of Ukraine and Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate)).
  • Internet/Wi-Fi: Widely available in cities. Local SIM: Kyivstar, Vodafone, Lifecell. Due to security concerns, using a "burner" phone with a local SIM and a VPN is recommended .

  • Road/Bus: Land borders with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova are open. Border crossings can be congested .
  • Transit: Many travellers fly to Poland (e.g., Rzeszów or Warsaw) and take a train or bus across the border .
  • Public transport: Metro, buses, and trolleybuses operate in major cities, but schedules may be disrupted.

Hotel types Many international hotels have closed. Local hotels, hostels, and apartments are available in major cities.

  • Safety: Upon arrival, identify the nearest shelter in your accommodation. Follow all safety protocols .
  • Opening hours: Shops and restaurants generally operate normally, but schedules may be affected by air raid warnings and curfews.
  • Local regulations: Strict curfews are in effect. Smoking is banned in enclosed public spaces.

Nightlife Nightlife is heavily restricted due to the curfew. Bars and clubs that are open close early. The "nightlife" experience is currently very limited.
