1. Entry Requirements & Documents

⚠️ Important Visa Update: The Pakistani government has announced a new visa policy from 1 July 2026, offering visa-free entry to citizens of 15 countries for a stay of up to 30 days. This policy is part of efforts to boost tourism.

Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Pakistan and have at least two blank pages for the entry stamp.

Visa: Most foreign nationals require a visa to enter Pakistan. The visa-on-arrival facility is limited to certain nationalities and specific entry points. The e-Visa system is the most widely used method for obtaining a visa.

  • e-Visa: Citizens of many countries can apply online at visa.nadra.gov.pk. The e-Visa allows a stay of up to 30 days and is valid for single entry.
  • Visa-Free Entry (New Policy): From 1 July 2026, citizens of 15 countries will be eligible for a visa-free stay of up to 30 days. This list includes China, Turkey, and some Gulf countries. Full details are expected from the Pakistani Ministry of Interior.
  • Visa on Arrival: Available for citizens of 25 countries (including Australia, the UK, and some European countries) when travelling for tourism, provided they are part of a group tour organised by a licensed travel agency. It is also available at certain airports for business purposes.
  • Visa Extension: Overstaying a visa incurs fines. Extensions can be applied for at the Ministry of Interior in Islamabad, but approval is not guaranteed. Ensure you apply before your visa expires to avoid legal issues.
  • Visa on Arrival (Business): Available for business visitors from many countries at major international airports. A letter of invitation from a Pakistani company is required.

2. Health, Vaccinations & Insurance

⚠️ Health Advisory: Dengue fever is a significant and year-round risk in urban areas, particularly during the monsoon season. Polio transmission is ongoing in Pakistan, and vaccination is essential. Medical facilities are limited, especially outside major cities, and private care is expensive.

Mandatory Vaccinations: A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission. A polio vaccination certificate is required for all travellers arriving from polio-endemic countries.

Recommended Vaccinations: Consult a travel health specialist well in advance. Recommended vaccinations include:

  • Hepatitis A – recommended for all travellers.
  • Typhoid – recommended for most travellers.
  • Hepatitis B – recommended for some travellers.
  • Rabies – recommended for travellers spending extended periods outdoors or in rural areas, due to the presence of stray dogs.
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) – ensure you are up to date.

Key Health Risks:

  • Dengue Fever: A high risk in urban areas; prevention relies on mosquito avoidance. Outbreaks are common during and after the monsoon season.
  • Polio: Ongoing transmission; ensure you are vaccinated. The CDC recommends a one-time booster dose of inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) for all travellers to Pakistan.
  • Malaria: Risk exists in some areas, particularly in the lowlands, Karachi, and the southern regions. Prophylaxis is recommended for travel to these areas.
  • Chikungunya: Cases have been reported; prevention is through mosquito avoidance.
  • Food & Waterborne Diseases: High risk of traveller's diarrhoea, typhoid, and hepatitis A. Drink only bottled or boiled water and maintain strict food hygiene.
  • Avian Influenza: Rare cases have been reported; avoid contact with live poultry and wild birds.

Travel Health Insurance: Essential. Ensure your policy covers medical evacuation, as reliable care is limited, especially outside major cities. Private clinics in Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore offer higher standards but require payment up-front.

  • Medication: Bring a sufficient supply of required medications in original packaging with a doctor's prescription. Medical supplies can be unreliable.
  • Tap Water: Do not drink tap water; use bottled or boiled water.
